Refundable lease-rate analysis

Multiple security deposit lease calculator

Calculate the payment savings and simple return from a lender's multiple security deposit program—using the exact deposit and money-factor terms shown on your quote.

Calculate the MSD savings

Calculated entirely in your browser. No credit application, contact details, or quote data is collected.

How multiple security deposits lower a lease payment

In a participating program, each additional security deposit reduces the money factor by a lender-defined amount. The reduced factor lowers the monthly rent charge. It does not change the residual value or the depreciation portion of the payment.

new money factor = current money factor − (deposit count × reduction per deposit)
monthly savings = (adjusted cap cost + residual value) × total MF reduction

MSD cash versus a lease down payment

A cap-cost reduction is money used to lower the amount being leased; it is not scheduled to come back at lease end. Additional security deposits are held as security under the lessor's program and may be refundable under the contract. That difference is important, but “refundable” does not mean risk-free: confirm whether unpaid charges, default, early termination, or other obligations may affect the refund.

How LeaseWorth calculates the simple return

The calculator divides total rent-charge savings by the cash held, then scales that result to one year based on the lease term. This is a simple annualized comparison—not a compounded APY, investment return promise, tax calculation, or guarantee that every deposit will be refunded.

simple annualized return = (total savings ÷ cash held) × (12 ÷ lease months) × 100

Example with seven MSDs

Suppose a confirmed program uses a 0.00007 reduction per deposit and the quote allows seven $650 deposits. Starting from a 0.00150 money factor, the factor becomes 0.00101. With a $43,000 adjusted cap cost, $26,100 residual, and 36-month term, the estimated savings are $33.86 per month and $1,218.92 over the lease. The $4,550 held produces an 8.93% simple annualized comparison before considering opportunity cost or contract risk.

Questions to ask before using MSDs

  1. Does this exact lessor and lease program permit additional security deposits?
  2. How many deposits are allowed, and how is each deposit amount calculated?
  3. What exact money-factor reduction applies to each deposit?
  4. When and how is the deposit balance returned?
  5. Which charges or events can be deducted from the refund?
  6. Can the program be combined with the advertised incentive or one-pay lease?

Avoid solving dealer markup with your own cash

First compare the quoted money factor with the lender buy rate. MSDs can be valuable when they reduce a legitimate program rate, but they should not distract from an unexplained dealer markup. A dealer deserves reasonable compensation; the rate and MSD savings should still be disclosed clearly enough for you to make an informed choice.

Frequently asked questions

What is a multiple security deposit on a car lease?

A participating lessor may let a qualified customer place additional security deposits in exchange for a lower money factor. The program, limit, deposit amount, and rate reduction are lender-specific.

Are multiple security deposits refundable?

They may be refundable at lease end under the lender program and contract, subject to obligations or permitted deductions. Confirm the exact refund terms in writing before paying them.

Are MSDs the same as a lease down payment?

No. A cap-cost reduction is prepaid money that lowers the financed lease balance. An MSD is security held under the contract and may be returned; it lowers the money factor only when the lender program says it does.

What money-factor reduction should I enter?

Enter the exact reduction per deposit supplied by the lessor or shown on the dealer worksheet. LeaseWorth intentionally provides no default because programs vary by lender, vehicle, state, and date.

Sources and limitations

MSD availability and terms come from the individual lessor—not a universal formula. Lexus Financial Services, for example, publicly describes a program allowing up to nine additional deposits while noting eligibility and state restrictions. That example must not be applied to another lender. Confirm every input against the current written program and lease contract.
